Comparing Magazines

I have chosen 2 different magazines but on the same topic 'music' to analyse and compare against each other. The first magazine I have chosen to analyse is 'NME' music magazine, this magazine is about the new up and coming music artists and also looking back at some past music legends interviewing them both and reviewing their present and past albums. NME's target audience is aimed at the teenage to young adult age ranges, but whilst also appealing to the older generations with its 'music legends' interviews. My other magazine that I am analysing and comparing against 'NME' is the bbc'c classical music magazine. This magazine is aimed to keep you up to dates with the latest classical news and rumours around the world. This magazine's target audience is the older generations as more older people listen too classical music.

Front Covers:

NME:

NME's front cover consists of a mixture of bright and dull colours, these colours consist of red, white, and black. The red areas really stand out against the grey and white background highlighting main points for example: what the magazine is about, free posters and top interviews. Also the bright colours attract people to read the magazine thus again attracting the younger generation. On the cover we also see a two very big headings both put in a font very easy to read. They are very easy to read because they are in a bold font, bold fonts are used to highlight key points so by using bold fonts throughout the front cover makes it look very attractive making people wanting to pick up the magazines read it. The layout of the front cover is very spaced out but with the inclusion of the bold font throughout the front cover it gives it a very pleasant readable front cover. The grey background throughout acts as white space but again all of the bold fonts used gives the front cover a very equal look and you hardly notice any of the 'white space' because it blends in. There isn't much photography used on the front cover just four separate pictured of all the band members, all the band members are wearing shirts giving them a very smart look but also a casual look as they are all wearing jeans. Two of the band members are wearing Nike air max's giving the reader the opinion that the band are being 'hipster' and trying to be fairly unique. They all have very surprised facial expressions again something which 'hipsters' are usually related too. All their faces are lighted well and each of the four band member has a fairly big drop shadow behind them showing depth in the picture taken. The colour scheme used is mostly made up of cool colours but then a warn colour is used to highlight key points on the magazines front cover, by doing this it makes the magazine looks very attractive and people will want to pick it up off the shelf. There is only two pieces of ornamentation used on the front cover and these are two pictures of the smiths which are found on the top right of the magazine and are also used as previews for what is inside the magazine as well as relating to the 'free posters that comes with the magazine. The magazine only has one piece of institutional information on it and that consists only of the barcode and price which is situated in the bottom right hand corner of the magazine so it is almost hidden in a very small box. This box is very small because the designer wants you too concentrate on everything else on the on that pages except for that in case the price puts you off from buying the magazine. The copy message used ties in perfectly to the visual dominant image because the copy message is just the name of the band used in the visual dominant. The pull quote saying 'BLOWN UP' has been used this links to alt-j so will automatically make people want to read it. The big picture and heading are used southern reader can tell straight away what the magazine is about.

BBC Classical Music Magazine:

The BBC's magazine consists of no bright colours at all just dull boring colours that include black, white and grey. This suits the older generations more because they like less bright colours and prefer things to be just clear and simple. At the top of the pages we see a fairly big heading just highlighting what the magazine is about for example it just reads 'music' thus linking back to it suiting the older generations more because they prefer it to clear and simple. The contents used on the front cover is is a very east to read font, each letter has wings on it making reading flow much easier compared to NME's where it's just block capitals with no wings. The white writing on the black background makes it very easy and clear to read. The layout of the magazine is very ordered for example all the writing is on one side of the magazine in a column and then a picture is situated on the other, this makes the magazine very easy to read which again suits the older generation where they like everything clear and simple. We don't find white space on this magazine we find black space as the colours have been reversed so it is white writing on a black background instead of black writing on a white background, but the black to white ratio is pretty equal making the front cover look very attractive thus making people want to pick it up. There isn't much Hierarchy on this front cover except for the headline which is just the name of the man pictured on the opposite side, this happens exactly the same on the NME cover. The photography on this page is just a man sitting down resting on his hands whilst holding a piece of sheet music, this world really well because the reader is straight away able to work out what the magazine is about just at a glance. The man on the cover is also looking directly at the camera making it feel like he is looking at you whenever you just glance at the magazine drawing you in and making you want to read it and thus in the process buying the magazine. The colour scheme is very cool and the colour don't complement each other making the cover look very boring but also attracting its target audience whom is the older generations. The cover consists of just one piece of graphic ornamentation and that is just a small picture in the bottom left corner of the magazine which is just a picture of the free cd you get with the magazine. This magazine cover also hold two pieces of institutional information for example a small triangle in the top right corner naming some radio 3 listings, the other piece on the bottom right hand corner of the magazine and this holds the barcode, price and other interviews and stories which are in the issue. These are pretty small so they don't take you eye of the main headline. The feature headline is placed in the left hand centre of the pages it grabs your attention with its big bold writing and then as you carry on reading the text gets smaller and smaller. The only downside of the magazine cover is that buy just glancing at it it is hard to tell what the magazine is actually about, you can tell that the magazine is about music by three name but without reading the smaller text on the front cover you cannot tell that it's a classical music magazine.

Double Page Spreads:

NME:

The layout of NME's double Page spread is very well ordered, we have a full picture background of the band and above them is a heading again in the bold font making it stand out and very easy to read. Along the right hand side we have part of and interview with band and then a caption underneath describing the picture, as well as another quote from one of the band members. The white space ratio is pretty equal as the box behind the interview has its opacity turned down to help it blend in, the use of this box equals the white space ratio. The typography for the title and quote are both in a bold font to make them stand out to catch the reader attention, the interview however uses the font like we saw on the BBC'S front cover with the wings on each letter to help it flow more for when you are reading it so again another technique to catching the readers attention. The hierarchy on the double page works very well for example you start with your attention being drawn straight to the title and as you move along that there is another box of writing attention end of it so you read that one and then finally at the end of that piece of writing is the interview and that continues down to the bottom of the pages where you would then turn the pages to finish. The mise-enscence in the photography is that they are all standing next teaching other showing that they are group, they are all surrounded by giant letters of their band name it makes the band look small but it stresses to the reader what the band is called so they remember who they are so they will buy there album, this is kind of like a way of subliminal messaging. And again in the photo they are looking straight at the camera so the reader then feels like he has connected with the people in the picture thus remembering who they are again. The colour scheme is very dark so the white font in the title stands out very well, this also makes the letters of the band in the picture stand out because they have red bulbs on them so it looks like the letter are lighting up the whole picture. We have one piece of institutional information and that is a 'puff' in the bottom left right hand corner of the pages which is just a little tiny quote not related to the page at all. The verbal message of the feature headline links to the picture creating a visual bridge between the both of them. The feature article headline uses a pun, instead of saying 'access all areas' it says 'access alt areas' this work very very well because the the name of the band the interview are called 'alt-J'. Also 'access alt areas' is alliteration, alliteration is used to make people remember things.

BBC Classical Music Magazine:

The layout of the BBC'S magazine is very neat and precise, for example the right hand page is made up of just a picture and this picture also reaches out onto the left hand page by around four centimetres. On the left hand page we have a bit heading highlighting the name of the person whom is being interviewed, a font with wings is used to do that so while being big and clear it also flows easily for the reader making you wish to read more. Under this we see a smaller paragraph and then the writing gets smaller again and this then moves onto the main section of writing which is the interview itself. All of these also uses the font with wings to help it flow again for easier reading. So the style of typography with wings has been used on purpose to make the reader want to read. As all the text is down one page it is quite obvious that the eyes will follow the text thus creating a downwards hierarchy. The photography used on this double page has been set on the beach, he is wearing a tweed jacket and is squinting looking out into the sun with the light on his face. This has obviously been done on purpose to make him look very chilled and relaxed and it looks like that people have dressed him up too look like that. The colour scheme on this page only consists of grey but just in lots of different shades of it. This makes the man look very retro and they carry this on to the next page where they try to recreate the retro beach look again but in a cartoon. The grey colours are used as they are very cool colours just like it would be for the man on the beach that is why he is wearing tweed. We have one piece on ornamentation on this double page spread and that is just a stamp sized portrait picture of the person whom which they are interviewing with a small caption of this just with his name. There is also only one piece of institutional information on this double page spread with a caption in the middle bottom of the two pictures stating where the picture was taken and when. The standfirst used underneath the feature article headline just gives you some brief information on the person being interviewed in case you didn't know much or had had never heard of him before. The main feature headline uses a pun for example it should say 'Great Britain's but instead it says 'Great Britten the links to the person being interviewed because his name is 'Benjamin Britten'
